Textual Analysis - Temple by Kings of Leon

Image
Temple – Kings of Leon Music Video Analysis The general meaning of the song is about their families, their wives and kids. Therefore, they star in the video. The main line in the lyrics is “I’d take one in the temple, I’d take one for you.” This line is essentially saying that they would be shot in the head for their family, they would sacrifice themselves for their wives and children. The word “Temple” goes back to the band’s Christian roots. The band which is made of three brothers and their cousin (the Followill’s), grew up going to church, their Father/Uncle was a pastor. A Temple as well as your body part is also a sacred place of worship, it is an interesting word choice as it links back to sacrifice just like Jesus.  The music to this song is much calmer and more melodic than the ones on the rest of the album, it still however has the typical Kings Of Leon rock vibes. There are smooth tempo changes between the verses and chorus which link them together perfectly. ...

Seeking Permission

Seeking Permission When using someone else's song you must get permission from them or the copyright holder, this is normally the band or artist's record label. This is to ensure no legal action will be made against you. If they grant you permission you are allowed to use it however if they do not, you can't. For my music video I wrote a short little email to Kings of Leon's record company requesting I can use their song for my project. Dear Copyright Holder at RCA Records,  I am writing to you today to request permission to use "Use Somebody" by Kings of Leon for an upcoming A-Level coursework project. With your permission this track will be used for educational purposes which involves creating a music video and a digipak for the artist. I will not receive any financial gain from using this song, as previously stated it is just for educational uses. The final video will only be seen by my classmates, a teacher and the examining board. The artist will be f...

History of The Song: Use Somebody

Image
History of The Song Song: Use Somebody Artist: Kings of Leon Released: 9th December 2008 (on the album Only By The Night) Narrative: The song has quite a strong narrative, it tells a story of someone who is missing another person. Formulaic : Yes, it follows the verse, chorus, verse (etc.) layout. Feel: The feel of the verses are much like he is pining, it is almost calming but when the chorus kicks in it's like a flash forward, like you're being thrown into the deep end of a swimming pool. They're polar opposites of each other. Emphasised Words: "Someone" and "Somebody" are the most used words in the song, they each appear eight times throughout. Lead singer of the band said the song is about being lonely on the road/tour. "It's about being far from home" he said on the bands website. Caleb said that when he was writing it he came up with the line 'I could use somebody'. He wasn't sure whether he was thinkin...

Brief Pitch

Brief Pitch My video will open with the main character opening his eyes. It will flash forward with shots of scenery in fast motion. It will then change and you see the character acting very angrily, throwing things and shouting at himself in the mirror. When the lyrics start in the song, we will cut back to the character in the bath and he is lip-syncing the words. This then shows a shot of the character on a swing in the park, conveying his loneliness. It also shows some clips from a beach scene. After this it goes into some mismatched scene with some sparklers at night, in the supermarket etc. When the verse starts again, we see the character in the living room and he is watching TV. It cuts to the TV and he is on it lip-syncing. It goes back to quick snippets of different scenes at the beach, at the arcade etc. It then goes back to some scenery and there is a wind down in the song. It will end with the character back in the bath and he lip-sync's the last line.

Mood Board of Initial Ideas

Image
Mood Board of Initial Ideas There are two sides to the mood board, this matches the two sides of my video. On the left, there are elements of play and fun and on the right it is very much sad and lonely. I chose to have this kind of narrative as it really fits with the song choice. The lyrics itself are very lonely and the lead singer of the band even mentioned how he was missing home when he wrote it. I wanted to use that as well as incorporate some reminiscing with happy times. The board also gives some ideas into some scenes I will have in my video. There will be a scene with sparklers as well as in the park, on the beach and in a bathroom.

Textual Analysis - Toxic by Britney Spears

Image
Toxic – Britney Spears Music Video Analysis The chorus lyrics of the song come from the other person’s perspective, in this case, it is the male(s) in the video. They’re essentially saying that Spears herself is toxic as seen in the video, however, it could also be taken the opposite way saying how Spears is killing the ‘toxic’ men. The line ‘Don’t you know that you're toxic?’ again could come from someone else’s point of view aimed at Spears but then could be seen as a rhetorical question or said by Spears herself to the male characters. The first line of the chorus ends by saying ‘I’m on a ride’ this links with the idea of the aeroplane, you ride an aeroplane. The lyric is linked with the video content. The entirety of the lyrics, however, could be taken in a completely different way and be a metaphor for the media. This song could be seen as a cry for help before her breakdown had fully developed. The media are toxic to those within the public eye, celebrities are highl...

Music Video Theory

Music Video Theory Semiotics by Roland Barthes: This is the study of signs and symbols. This consists of a denotation and a connotation. The denotation of a sign is its literal meaning, they signify connotations of the object. In music videos, semiotics can be used along with the mise-en-scene, costume etc.  In my music video, my character is dressed like a normal man in his twenties. The clothes he is wearing are achievable and believable to the audience. The house is a small little flat which is what someone of him age may be living in. The t-shirt he is wearing is black, this shows he is rather mysterious, he could possibly be evil but we don't know. The colour connotes the feeling of fear and the unknown. This could imply that he is angry partly due to fear of something, like fear of being alone. The coat he is wearing on the beach is blue, it shows he is lonely. The blue connotes sadness and regret, this may be what the character is feeling. Structuralism by Levi...

Codes and Conventions of a Music Video

Image
Codes and Conventions of a Music Video General Conventions: Lip syncing - This is used normally in the performance side of a music video. The artist mimes the lyrics to the song whilst they're filming the video, the track is then edited in with the video during post production. It is fairly normal on a music video set to have the track playing in the background so the artist is able to match up the timing with the words perfectly. Colours - The colours within a music video are generally used to represent the type of genre the music is and helps to portray the mood. A pop music video which has a fast and upbeat track will have brighter colours and more saturation. For example, in the music video below for Ariana Grande's 'Side to Side', there is a heavy use of the colours pink and blue. They are so bright to the fact where they are almost neon. The bright colours are associated with joy and happiness, all something a pop song wants you to feel. Another ex...

History of Music Videos

History of Music Videos The music videos we know today first began on TV. At 12:01am on August 1st 1981 MTV made history when they became the first ever 24 hour music video channel. This was the birth of the music video. The first video played on MTV was 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by The Buggles . On that industry changing day, MTV played a total of 208 music videos by well known artists from all over the world. Some of these being, Stevie Nicks , Tom Petty , Phil Collins , Blondie and David Bowie .  However, back in the 1920's there was an arrival of musical short films, this is where the idea for music videos truly began. These were produced throughout the 20th century until our modern day musical came into existence. Some of the most famous musical shorts come from early animated films like Walt Disney's 'Fantasia'. Musical films had a huge impact on what we know as a music video today. There are a number of well-known music videos that have follo...

What is a Music Video?

What is a music video? A music video is a short video showcasing a narrative or performance to fit with a song. They are generally used as aid to the song or more modernly for promotional and marketing purposes. The video will often produce more sales on a song or an album. They first became a thing in the 1980's when MTV began their reign. There are three main types of music video, narrative, abstract and performance. The most popular type is narrative with a hint of performance. The narrative music video is very illustrative to the song, it normally tells a story using the words in the song. Absract is a video that has no relation to the song, it is generally more artsy and interesting to watch. The performance within a music video is normally just someone lipsyncing or playing an instrument. Performance music videos are mainly used by bands and more pop artists.

Preliminary - LWYMMD by Taylor Swift

Image
Preliminary Video: For the preliminary task my sister chose the song "Look What You Made Me Do" by Taylor Swift because it is current and one of her favourites. We were unable to create the music video shot by shot do to the complex nature of the original music video. If we were to do it again, I would make sure that the lipsync matched a bit more however it is just a preliminary so it does not have to be perfect. We made sure that the editing was as sharp as possible however it could have been faster.

SWOT Evaluation of AS

SWOT Evaluation of AS Here are some links to audio files of me talking about my previous work last year. If they do not work, there is a rough explanation of what I said below. Strengths: https://vocaroo.com/i/s0onNjroVwKK Weakness': https://vocaroo.com/i/s1rAIuIvTH3f Opportunities: https://vocaroo.com/i/s1gAonYE3vHI Threats: https://vocaroo.com/i/s1GvB2r4Puqv - Last years work was not a piece that I particularly liked however surprisingly there were actually a few good things about it. The camera work and variation were very strong. Within the first 20 seconds, we had numerous different shot types i.e. long, short etc. The opening shot was very conventional for the genre of film. It gave the audience some insight to where the location is and setting the scene. Throughout the video, there are POV shots which give the opening a more personal view. This adheres to the childlike genre. The actors playing the characters are also very conventional. They're the ag...
