History of Music Videos
The music videos we know today first began on TV. At 12:01am on August 1st 1981 MTV made history when they became the first ever 24 hour music video channel. This was the birth of the music video. The first video played on MTV was 'Video Killed The Radio Star' by The Buggles. On that industry changing day, MTV played a total of 208 music videos by well known artists from all over the world. Some of these being, Stevie Nicks, Tom Petty, Phil Collins, Blondie and David Bowie.
However, back in the 1920's there was an arrival of musical short films, this is where the idea for music videos truly began. These were produced throughout the 20th century until our modern day musical came into existence. Some of the most famous musical shorts come from early animated films like Walt Disney's 'Fantasia'.
Musical films had a huge impact on what we know as a music video today. There are a number of well-known music videos that have followed the style of the old musical shorts. One of these being Madonna's 'Material Girl'. This followed the staging idea from 'Diamonds Are A Girls Best Friend' from the movie 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes'. There are numerous Michael Jackson videos that also show a resemblance to the dance sequences in famous Hollywood musicals. This includes his most famous dance routine 'Thriller' as well as 'Bad' which is based on 'West Side Story's' stylized dance scenes.
Almost every artist now has at least one music video. They are more so used for promotional and marketing purposes rather than solely entertainment. As of September 20th 2017, the top 10 most viewed music videos on YouTube are:

It is a very successful way of showcasing a single from an album. It allows people to have a visual of the song. The video/song often shows the tone of the entire album, if the person watching the video likes that video/song then they may want to purchase the album. Music videos are also used for synergy with other companies, an artist can use a certain product or have it on show, this is the artist and the brand working together for a benefit. The videos can also now be used as advertisement for a movie, if the song is from a movie soundtrack they will often include clips from the movie with a hint of performance from the artist.
