What is a music video?

A music video is a short video showcasing a narrative or performance to fit with a song. They are generally used as aid to the song or more modernly for promotional and marketing purposes. The video will often produce more sales on a song or an album. They first became a thing in the 1980's when MTV began their reign.

There are three main types of music video, narrative, abstract and performance. The most popular type is narrative with a hint of performance. The narrative music video is very illustrative to the song, it normally tells a story using the words in the song. Absract is a video that has no relation to the song, it is generally more artsy and interesting to watch. The performance within a music video is normally just someone lipsyncing or playing an instrument. Performance music videos are mainly used by bands and more pop artists.
