History of The Song: Use Somebody
History of The Song
Song: Use Somebody
Artist: Kings of Leon
Released: 9th December 2008 (on the album Only By The Night)
Narrative: The song has quite a strong narrative, it tells a story of someone who is missing another person.
Formulaic: Yes, it follows the verse, chorus, verse (etc.) layout.
Feel: The feel of the verses are much like he is pining, it is almost calming but when the chorus kicks in it's like a flash forward, like you're being thrown into the deep end of a swimming pool. They're polar opposites of each other.
Emphasised Words: "Someone" and "Somebody" are the most used words in the song, they each appear eight times throughout.
Lead singer of the band said the song is about being lonely on the road/tour. "It's about being far from home" he said on the bands website. Caleb said that when he was writing it he came up with the line 'I could use somebody'. He wasn't sure whether he was thinking of a person, home or God.
The song became a hit in Europe sitting at #1 in Belguim and Poland, #2 in the UK as well as Australia and scored the #4 spot on the US Billboard Top 100. It was certified 2x Platinum in Australia and the UK selling over 1.2 million copies. It was named one of the best selling singles of all time and won the Grammy Award for Record of The Year in 2010.
