Viral Marketing Strategy
Viral Marketing Strategy
'Viral marketing is any marketing technique that includes websites or users to pass on the marketing message to other websites to pass on a marketing message to other sites or users, creating a potentially exponential growth in the message's visability and effect.'
Personally I think sites like Instagram and Twitter are more effective than YouTube in terms of promotional value. More people follow people on these type of social media than they do on their YouTube or Vevo Channel. So, to get the music video noticed I could take the approach proven to work by the likes of Taylor Swift and Justin Bieber, this being Social Media Promotion/Marketing.
During the summer of 2015, Taylor Swift announced she had created a music video to go along with her hit song 'Bad Blood', she also announced that Kendrick Lamar would join the song and rap on it (unlike the original). To market this video, she proceeded to post movie-like posters of each member of her 'girl squad' who would be starring in the video. Some of these girls included:
- Haley Williams (Singer)
- Ellie Goulding (Singer)
- Hailee Steinfeld (Actress/Singer)
- Lily Aldrige (Model)
- Zendaya (Actress/Singer)
- Gigi Hadid (Model)
- Martha Hunt (Model)
- Ellen Pompeo (Actress)
By including so many different people, she reached all of their fanbases as well as her own. This was a genius marketing plan and lead to her beating the 24 hour record (at the time, later to be succeeded by Adele's 'Hello' and then again by herself with 'Look What You Made Me Do') for the most views on a music video.
Justin Bieber had a similar campagn however used 56 other stars to promote it for him. Before the music video for 'What Do You Mean?' dropped, he had other famous celebrities to help him promote for it. Some of these stars include:
- Hailee Steinfeld (Actress/Singer)
- James Corden (Actor/Talk Show Host)
- Shaquille O'Neal (NBA Star)
- Ed Sheeran (Singer)
- Gigi Hadid (Model)
- Tyler Oakley (YouTuber)
- Martha Stewart (TV Chef)
- Alec Baldwin (Actor)
These stars along with numerous others held up signs saying 'What Do You Mean?' along with the corresponding amount of days left until the video dropped. All of these pictures were posted on Justin Bieber's official Instagram page where the fans from both Justin and all these other stars could find out about the video.
